What We Do

Stump Grinding Done Properly

A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a breeding ground for pests, and an eyesore. We remove it cleanly using professional grinding equipment.

Ground Below Grade

We grind 150 to 300mm below ground level. The area can then be replanted with lawn, shrubs, or paved over without any stump interference.

Any Stump Size

From small garden stumps to large commercial tree bases. We handle stumps of all diameters, including hardwoods and large Eucalyptus root systems.

Tidy Finish

The wood chip material is used to fill and level the hole, or removed entirely. We rake and tidy the area before we leave.

What Is Stump Grinding?

No More Stumps, No Regrowth

Stump grinding is the fastest, cleanest way to deal with a leftover tree stump. We grind it below ground level so you can mow, plant, or pave over the area without any trace that a tree was ever there.

How Stump Grinding Works

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting disc studded with carbide teeth to chip the stump and the top of the root system into small wood chips. The machine works across the stump in overlapping passes, moving deeper with each pass. The process is loud and generates a lot of sawdust and chips — we clean everything up before leaving.

How Deep Do We Grind?

Standard grinding depth is 200–300 mm below the existing ground level — enough to allow lawn or garden soil to be backfilled and for turf to re-establish. For areas being paved or concreted we can go deeper on request. Large lateral roots near the surface are also ground back where they are causing uplift on paths and driveways.

Why Grinding Prevents Regrowth

Many Lowveld tree species — particularly wattle (acacia), bluegum, and wild fig — will coppice aggressively from a cut stump if it is left in the ground. Sprouts can appear within weeks and grow back into a substantial tree within a few years. Grinding destroys the vascular tissue at the stump collar that drives regrowth, ending the problem permanently.

Termite Prevention

A decaying stump in the ground is a perfect feeding station for subterranean termites and wood-boring beetles — both common across Mpumalanga. Once they establish in a stump they can spread into structural timber in your home. Removing the stump below ground eliminates the food source before it becomes a pest control problem.

What Affects the Cost

Stump grinding price is mainly driven by stump diameter and hardness of the wood species. A 200 mm pine stump grinds quickly; a 600 mm leadwood or hardwood stump takes considerably longer. Access also matters — stumps in tight corners or on slopes require extra time. We quote on site so you receive a firm price before any work begins.
