Pruning may be appropriate for a structurally sound tree with dead, crossing or overextended branches. Removal may be safer for a dead, unstable or severely damaged tree when pruning cannot solve the risk.
Signs that deserve assessment
- Dead branches or hanging limbs.
- New cracks in a stem or branch union.
- Root lifting, soil movement or a changed lean.
- Decay, fungal growth or cavities.
Do not top a tree as a shortcut
Removing large sections can leave weak regrowth, large wounds and an unstable structure. Ask what problem the work solves and what the expected result will be.
Do not climb for a better photograph. Keep away from hazardous trees and power lines, and contact the relevant utility or emergency service where necessary.
